Thank GOD for Terminal Safety giving me focus, because were one to spend a moment on Global Events, I would not have a newsletter to share with you this week.
If the last week is to be judged by the oscillations in my meager stock portfolio, it has been wild, and this is looking at the World Cup, the on-off peace or ceasefire and the tremendous hardship with weather in Asia.
It is terribly distressing seeing the floods in China - severe though unreported in India too. No one still takes Global Warming seriously, and we are all exacerbating the problem - my kids remind me everyday - as we plunge along the path of AI. That unfortunately is the world we will leave the next generation - ravaged, pillaged, disrupted and destroyed.
Separately, Quantum and I are honoured to be confirmed as members of TIC4.0, whose membership is truly a leader board of the terminal industry. we do hope to be able to contribute in some way, and clearly, Safety has to finds its spot on the agenda.
Mine is France. But can you imagine if it is Norway

Most terminals have invested heavily in CCTV infrastructure, yet incidents continue to occur. The reason is simple: cameras record events- they don't interpret risk or trigger action.
True safety intelligence goes beyond visibility. It transforms video, sensor data, and operational context into real-time insights that help identify hazards before they become incidents.
As terminals become more complex, the shift we will be a part of is not about collecting more data. It is about enabling data to think, learn, and support timely intervention. The future of terminal safety will belong to organizations that move from passive monitoring to proactive prevention.

The most effective terminals don't measure success by how well they respond to incidents, they measure it by how many incidents never occur.
I speak about why preventive inspections should be more than a compliance exercise, why they need to move beyond static checklists and delayed reporting, and become live risk controls that trigger action immediately and improve over time.
In modern terminal operations, prevention isn't a process that follows an incident—it's a capability built into everyday operations.

Your Terminal Operating System is built to optimize operations—not manage safety.
It tracks containers, equipment, and throughput with precision. But it wasn't designed to detect unsafe behaviours, predict risks, or prevent incidents before they happen.
When safety is treated as just another module within an operational system, critical insights can be lost, near misses become data points instead of lessons, and emerging risks remain hidden.
Operational excellence and safety excellence are two different objectives. They deserve two different systems working together.
