AI is everywhere. But interest alone doesn’t create value.
The real question is: when does AI interest become AI intent?
In this week’s newsletter, I share my thoughts on moving beyond the hype — from evaluating technology based on demonstrated capability, to turning safety data into intelligence that helps us understand, anticipate and act.
I also look at how Guaran Feeder is turning its interest in AI into a clear roadmap for tangible operational value.
AI is not about adopting technology for the sake of it. It is about knowing where it can make a difference — and having the intent to act.
There is a lot of talk about AI across our industry at the moment. Indeed, every industry you can think of is grappling with it in some shape or form. Everyone is curious, many are experimenting, but the real question is: when does interest become intent?
We spend a lot of time discussing how to choose a technology or provider, and I think AI is giving buyers an opportunity to reframe that conversation. Rather than judging capability by scale, reputation or a long feature lists, you now have the chance to ask the technology to demonstrate what it can actually do– on your processes, your operational scenarios.
Perhaps the same principle applies to safety data. We have enormous amounts of information sitting in our terminals, but information only becomes valuable when it can help us understand, anticipate and act.
There are those who are walking the talk of such intent and these guiding principles. I am particularly chuffed by Guaran Feeder S.A. Guaran Feeder taking that step with Quantum. Their move into AI is not about adopting AI because it’s a bandwagon to jump onto. They have looked at their operations, identified where tangible value can be created, and are building a roadmap to get there.
That, to me, is how interesting journeys begin. Journeys that translate intent into something that actually delivers value.
Till next week,
Arjun

You likely have a long list of criteria when making software buying decisions. Fit. Customisation. Configuration effort. Time to go live. Vendor size. Scores.
But how many of these actually demonstrate capability? For years, capability was difficult to see before signing the contract. So scale became a proxy. Scale became the factor with disproportionate influence on the buying decision. Scale made taking a call easier, safer.
AI allows us to change that.
Today, you can ask a vendor to demonstrate what their technology can actually do– live, unscripted, using your operational scenarios.
In this week's video, I share why capability, not scale, should drive your next technology decision.

It is a pleasure to see Guaran Feeder S.A. take another bold step in its long-standing commitment to technology and innovation– this time into AI.
From innovative barge design and convoy composition to CONNECT and their online operating portal, Guaran Feeder has consistently demonstrated a willingness to evolve.
Their decision to explore AI is a natural continuation of that mindset.
When they approached Quantum following the launch of Qavach.AI, we didn’t just ask, “Where can AI be used?”
We looked at their processes, inefficiencies, errors, rework, documentation and costs. Then we worked together to identify where AI could create tangible value.
The result is a roadmap covering automation, visibility, intelligent dashboards, a Copilot and a powerful Digital Assistant.
The move from from AI interest to AI intent is what I find most encouraging. Many in our industry are toying with the idea of inducting AI, but Guaran Feeder has been bold in converting the interest to Intent.
That is where the real journey begins. That is my nudge to leaders considering AI- our playbook can help you tackle what might seem overwhelming at first, getting you on the path, commence a pilot and move to production.

On-Time. Accurate. Verified. Integrated. Analysed. Actioned.
Container terminals track almost everything — vessel movements, crane cycles, fuel, throughput.
Yet safety decisions are still too often buried in spreadsheets and reports.
Every incident, near miss, risk assessment and audit creates valuable data. The real value comes from turning that data into actionable intelligence.
When safety data becomes accessible, connected and analysed in real time, HSE can move from reactive to proactive– and from compliance-driven to performance-driven. Safety data can become a tool for continuous improvement, operational efficiency, and a true safety-first culture.
With AI, automation and predictive analytics, the opportunity is no longer simply to track what happened.
It is to understand, anticipate and act.
