“Suffering in Silence” is a term one hears with sadness from people in our personal lives. It brings forth many emotions - sympathy, compassion and even pity. A lot of people do not understand the reason for the suffering and are distressed in being unable to help. Often, the suffering is related to external factors, even clinical ones, and there is very little well-wishers can do.

Over my 47 years as a maritime professional, I have frequently come across many business processes that “Suffer in Silence”, be it from a lack of process evolution, or digitalisation, or apathy or budgetary constraints. I am grateful my journey has allowed me to bring about positive change.

I was fortunate as a first trip Master to have the support of my ship managers to bring about on-board changes, and even more so, in being able to work 10 years at the most innovative and futuristic shipping line Norasia. Through my tenure at CSAV and as the owner of Quantum BSO, I built many software systems and addressed many industry needs and pain-points and was a part of a culture that drove digitalisation in the supply chain.

Yet, it was only when we started to address the HSE environment at container terminals and the need for digitalisation did we appreciate the true extent of pain points and the needs for pain relievers. This was a critical function at the terminal, where the HSE team worked in a high-intensity environment of high risk, with rudimentary legacy tools, often no more than spreadsheets. Risk mitigation was often through their passion, high intensity at work, time, energy and commitment.

Analysing the pain points as we collected data from one terminal to the next, we created an extensive collage of critical needs that could very simply be eliminated with digitalisation. The same software would be a panacea or a pain reliever, create a Safety Culture, and a Safe Haven of Zero Incidents. The greater benefits of wellness, pride in the place of work and the environment are still unquantifiable.

The barriers to digitalisation are no more than awareness of a great solution like the Qavach, or a budget that is a fraction of the ROI that the change is guaranteed to give.

Give us a call and do a test drive of the software. As Steve Jobs said……………..Seeing is believing.
