Revisiting this conversation with Marcus was a deeply reflective experience—one that brought back moments from a time when uncertainty wasn’t theoretical, it was lived every single day.

We spoke about sailing through the Strait of Hormuz during the Iran–Iraq War—when every voyage carried real risk, and decisions had to be made with limited information and no margin for error. I shared my experience aboard the VLCC Caribbean Breeze, including the day it was struck by an Iranian missile—an event that stays with you, not just as a memory, but as a perspective-shaping moment.

What struck me during this conversation is how relevant those experiences remain today. With thousands of seafarers currently navigating similar tensions in the Gulf, the context may have changed, but the underlying realities of risk, resilience, and responsibility at sea have not.

This wasn’t just about looking back—it was about understanding what those experiences mean in today’s world, and the lessons they continue to offer on safety, leadership, and decision-making under pressure.

Grateful to Marcus Hand for creating the space to revisit and reflect on these moments.

I hope this conversation resonates with those navigating uncertainty—at sea or otherwise.
